Welcome to The World of EM

Since 1982 EM Technology® has led the curve in agricultural and environmental fields. Dr Teruo Higa, the inventor of EM Technology®, developed EM•1® Microbial Inoculant as an alternative to synthetic chemicals. He was a professor of horticulture at the University of Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan.

Now used on 6 continents, Effective Microorganisms™ is a powerful tool replacing many products used in the home or in industry. "Effective" in that the microorganisms can change and improve the environment in which it is applied.

EM•1® is safe for the environment, people, and animals. It consists of non-pathogenic and non-toxic microorganisms. It is a brown to dark brown color liquid solution consisting of live culture of beneficial microorganisms. It is produced through a fermentation process and consists of water, molasses, and 3 major groups of the following beneficial microorganisms –

  • Lactic acid bacteria, has a strong fermenting effect – and are found in yogurt, cheese, buttermilk, sour cream, and pickles. It has good effect on the digestion system.
  • Yeast produces vitamins & other material necessary for plant growth – and there are various yeasts used for baking bread and cakes.
  • Phototropic bacteria produce sugars crucial to plant growth. It is found in every soil and water source in the world and have been part of the food chain since the beginning of time.

The technology and the process of manufacturing EM•1® are from Japan, but the microorganisms are from within the country in which EM•1® is manufactured. EM•1® is currently produced in 54 countries, including Malaysia.

Each licensee activates the EM•1® Microbial Inoculant under strict rules of EMRO (EM Research Organization) so that it is consistent with each other around the world. Through its licensee in America, EM•1® is certified by the Organic Materials Research Institute (OMRI); meaning that, when a product is "OMRI Listed" the product has been reviewed and determined to be allowed for use in organic production. Organic growers can then use these OMRI Listed products and still have their operation maintain their organic certification.
